Hexderity app review: a tile matching game with cool graphics

Reviews

Introduction

Hexderity by Ben Nizan is a traditional tile matching game with graphics and sound effects that are anything but traditional. If you played games as a kid where you had to turn over cards one at a time, remember the pictures, and turn them back over in an attempt to finally match two cards, then this game will have a familiar feel for you. If you’re looking for an adult example think Mah-jong – only not quite as complicated. Hexderity app is available for purchase from the App Store at a cost of $1.99 and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

Find Matching Tiles to Complete the Board

The strategy behind tile matching games doesn’t tend to change very much – there’s only so much you can do to vary the gameplay of this type of game. With this in mind, developers have a tough task to create a game in this category that stands out from the crowd and it’s a rather large crowd. What you can do is create cool images that aren’t very common, throw in some cool effects, and top it off with some eerie music and you just might have a winning formula – this is exactly the formula the developers of Hexderity have used. The result is a pretty decent game.

There are no ads or in-app purchases to worry about in this game, which is great, but the $1.99 price tag may seem like a tough sell in a category where there are so many competitors that offer their games for free. Like anything else though, you always have to make a compromise with free games. So, that normally means they’re loaded with annoying ads. Essentially what you’re paying for here is the ability to play a game in peace without having to worry about ads getting in the way. There are no instructions in this app, and although a tile matching game is normally pretty straightforward this one has a few little extras that would benefit from a bit of an explanation. Hexderity app will require 43.5 MB of available space on your iOS device.

The Essentials

The background music for this is kind of an eerie space theme which grows on you. The actual game basics are pretty standard for a matching game except the tiles in this one are hexagon shaped. Each tile hides a picture with a native theme. As you turn over a tile the idea is to try and remember where you saw that tile last and match them up – pretty normal for a tile matching game.

What helps this game to stand out just a little bit, besides there being no ads to worry about, is the special skills you can collect to help you. As you complete each game successfully you collect Volts which are the currency of the game. You can then cash in the Volts once you’ve collected enough of them for special powers such as foresight – the ability to see a quick preview of two or three tiles before the game begins.  This definitely helps to keep things interesting.
