Introduction
Bus Derby by Dimension Technics is a racing game app where you take control over different kind of buses. The game starts out rather easy, but soon you will find out that racing different buses against each other can be quite hard.
While progressing though the racing games of mobile, you will earn coins, which you can use to unlock new vehicles, maps, and other game modes. You will also gather experience, which is needed to unlock different races.

How the Game Works
Bus Derby is an easy game to pick up and play, but as mentioned before, it can be quite hard to master. You use on-screen pedals to speed up your bus. While racing, you will slowly fill up a boost bar.
If you double-tap the gas pedal, you will go in turbo mode until your meter is empty, but you can use tiny bits of it if you let go of the pedal while in turbo mode. You will be bumped into by other buses, which will make it necessary to counter-steer and adjust your line.
If you get pushed off track (which is a fun strategy to use against the other buses), you will lose a lot of time. You steer by tilting your device in different directions, which doesn’t make this game very good to play on public transport or other places with many people.
Upgrades, In-App Purchases, and Ads
Buying new buses, with different stats such as speed and power, is very expensive. You will only gain money in-app when you win a race, and it’s not that much, so you will have to perform pretty well to be able to unlock the next bus.
You can also upgrade your bus, with better engine power, more boosting power, or better tires. As with every free game on the app store, you can buy gold coins, which is the in-game currency.
These cost anywhere between $1.99 and $9.99 and will also get rid of ads for you, although the ads in this game are nowhere as annoying as in other free-to-play games.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Fun to play
- Easy to learn, hard to master
- Knock other racers off track
Cons
- Coins are hard to come by
- Only tilt-steering mechanics available
Conclusion
Bus Derby is a very fun game. It takes all the seriousness of racing games out of the equation and just focuses on you having a good time. It’s absolutely brilliant to knock other players of track and gain boost by drifting around corners.
That said, the game is quite hard and you don’t get rewarded much for not winning a race. As the game only supports tilt steering, the game is not very well suited to play on a commute or in other areas with a lot of people around. The app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone.
