When it comes to gaming, we tend to think of the console wars, and then of course the PC. There is a fight between Sony and Microsoft as to who are on top, then Nintendo sits in third while the PC is seen as the more specialist and expensive form of gaming. What of mobile gaming though, doesn’t it have a bigger player base?

If we looked at it in terms of actual players, this argument may have some merit. The sheer scale of the mobile gaming community now is huge, and it provides the big game companies with plenty of money. In terms of technological dominance though, it is easy to argue that the PC is still on top, and the consoles still hold the popular ground. This can change though, very easily.

Mobile gaming has come a long way since the days of playing Tetris or Snake on a simple mobile phone. These days we have complicated games that are easily downloaded and played in a matter of minutes. The freemium model also allows for players to download the core game first, then pay later if they decide to.

This ease of use has helped mobile phones and tablets find a place in the casual gaming market, and to gain a huge foothold. More dedicated hardcore gamers may like to believe that their gaming platform of choice is the dominator of the gaming world, but in terms of sheer use, the mobile devices are winning the war for hearts and minds.

The simple fact is that the so called “causal gamer” is enticed into gaming on mobile devices through sheer ease of use. There are so many games out there now, that there is a choice for everybody. Whether it be playing on online bingo sites, a game of Candy Crush Saga, or some other game from the numerous genres available, there is something out there for all of us.

That isn’t to say though that the focus of the game companies is on mobile devices. The big Triple A titles that gain all the attention from fans are aimed at the big consoles and PC, as this is what tends to get them more attention. The graphics are superior, there is more processing power, and technical innovation is helping to make the games fun.

The mobile devices are fighting back though with the likes of augmented reality, and virtual reality. While virtual reality may not be the best mobile technology at the moment, AR has gained a foothold with Pokémon Go, and we can expect many clones of that game in the coming year. The chaos that game caused shows the power of mobile gaming, and the force it has become.
