Aesop for Children app review: a great collection of famous parables

Reviews

Introduction

There are a lot of children’s books in the App Store, most of them based on fairytales from the Grimm Brothers. There are so many stories out there, however, that a lot of them overstretch by trying to make an app super-interactive or by adding all kind of bells and whistles to the drawings. In most cases this is quite cool, but sometimes it’s massively overdone. Developer Library of Congress has actually gone the completely other way, with a stylish app called Aesop for Children. It is compatible with iPad and iPhone and is a beautiful collection of stories with a deeper meaning.

App Content

I was amazed when I first opened the Aesop for Children app. There are over 140 different parables in here, all illustrated with beautiful interactive artwork. Each artwork reacts differently when interacted with, but they will all have something to do with the story you are reading. The parables from Aesop all have a deeper meaning and morale, so this app is a great way to introduce moral education to your children. Not only will they love hearing the stories read by you, the stories are also really well-adapted for children to read themselves. The app doesn’t have a Read to Me function, but luckily, the stories are relatively short and would make fantastic bedtime stories.

Who was Aesop?

Aesop was a Greek slave and story-teller who supposedly lived between 620 and 560 B.C. Aesop's fables are some of the most well-known in the world. They have been translated in multiple languages and become popular in dozens of cultures through the course of five centuries. They have been told and retold in a variety of media, from bedtime stories to written storybooks to stage, film, and animated cartoon versions. These parables have even made a lot of proverbs from today come to life, such as “sour grapes” and “a bird in the hand.”

Everyone who owns either an iPad or an iPhone should check out this  bed time app. It’s a great combination of fantastic art, great stories, and deeper meanings. Your children will be able to learn how to read and learn about deeper meanings in stories. In total there are 140 different parables available in the app, and all are completely free of charge. Even though the interactivity and the artwork are all well integrated, the app is just under 27 MB, which is quite small. The app is fully compatible with both iPad and iPad.
