SUPER WHY Phonics Fair app review: carnival-themed phonics games for ages three to six from the beloved PBS Kids preschool series

Reviews

Introduction

Adapted from the hit PBS KIDS series, SUPER WHY, which is loved by children across the nation, SUPER WHY Phonics Fair is a vibrant and wonderful iPhone and iPad app designed to help children aged three to six learn reading, word-building, and phonic skills.

This app employs a classic carnival theme with five interactive games to match, each one designed to help children practice phonics, particularly the 30 major word families.

For the price of $2.99, this 205 MB app will introduce your child to the world of reading. Let's find out what this app is all about.

Five Fun Games

SUPER WHY Phonics Fair features five awesome games namely: Woofster's Woof-De-Word Coaster, Princess Presto's Spectacular Spelling Wheel, Wonder Red's Wonder Words Ball Toss, Alpha Pig's Whack-A-Word, and Super Why's Bumper Words. The names alone are so adorably cute and, I daresay, creative, that I am already hooked!

Each one of these games incorporates a few of the 30 key word families that are essential for learning to read. For instance, the -ALL word family consists of words such as ball, tall, wall, and mall. With each game, children can earn more then 130 types of stickers which can be used to decorate the Phonics Fair Prize Booth.

Once your child has reached an advanced level and you feel they are ready to progress to more challenging tasks, there is an in-app purchase waiting for you which I'll talk about in a minute.

Parents' Tools

SUPER WHY Phonics Fair has state-of-the-art parental controls. This features an in-depth progress tracker which allows parents to see how well their little ones are faring. You will have full access to information pertaining to how well your child is doing in each of the games, and find out which particular word families require more attention.

The aforementioned in-app purchase will give you an additional 30 word families to challenge your children with word families that are a bit more complex. This includes Level 2 word families such as the -AKE and -OOK families. This expansion pack also includes an expanded progress tracker, along with more rewards for completion of games, further expanding the learning experience.

You can also enable notifications which will be presented to you when your child has practiced 10 new word families, and when he or she has completed all of the first 30 word families.

Final Words

I think SUPER WHY Phonics Fair is a beautiful app from conception to execution and truly worth far more than its price of $2.99. As usual the developers over at PBS Kids have done a fantastic job providing parents with yet another way to facilitate learning in children, through an enjoyable means, from the convenience of their iPhones and iPads.
