ABC First Words for Children app review: a great way for children to learn English

Reviews

Introduction

When you are still a young child, learning a new language can be a lot easier than trying to learn when you're older. The reason for this is because before you turn four years old, your brain takes in information in a different way, and you don’t really need to study, but just by listening to and using a language, you will acquire the skill of speaking it. When you start learning when you are older, you will notice that you will have to start to study to learn how to speak a foreign language fluently. For children who are growing up in a non-English environment it is difficult to immerse them in a language, but as a parent you can now give them a head-start by introducing them to ABC First Words for Children by developer Phillip Metzler. This app is developed for both iPad and iPhone.

What it Offers

In the free version of the app that I have tested, you will only have access to the Alphabet section of the app. Even though this app is merely designed to give you a taster what to expect from the rest of the app, it doesn’t actually teach your kids any words, which is a bit of a letdown. The ABC section of the app is very well-designed though. You can tap each letter to hear the voice tell you how you pronounce it, and all the letters of the alphabet look like funny little monsters. You can also move the letters around, which can be a great way to test your children in the order of the alphabet.

What to Expect

Another huge pet peeve of mine is when developers fill their app, especially when it’s designed for kids, with ads. This app is a good example of that, though by buying the other chapters you will also disable all of these annoying pop-ups and screen-filling monstrosities. When you do pay the $2.99 to unlock all the other categories, you will receive access to all different kinds of categories such as family, transport, animals, insects and numbers. In total there are 11 extra categories to unlock and they all work similar to the ABC section.

Conclusion

I really believe that this app can introduce your toddlers to English in a perfect way, teaching them words that they can use in daily life and give them a head-start for when they are older. The ads in the app are very annoying, but they will disappear when you unlock all other 11 categories. The app is designed for both iPad and iPhone and is just over 30 MB.
