King of Words app review: who will rule this game of words?

Reviews

Introduction

King of Words by Star Arcade Oy is one of those apps that just might take over Words With Friends when it comes to popularity. There are tons of word game apps available in the App Store, but not all of them are worthy of mention. This one surely is: it isn’t a rehashed classic! It’s sure to get you addicted fast and keep your interest.

What It's All About

It’s kind of like Scrabble, but not. It’s kind of like Boggle, but not. Confused yet? Don’t worry, you’ll see what I mean if you read on. Basically, you and your opponent each get 90 letters in the middle of a board. You have to sift through them and create as many words as you can. The more you can spell, the more points you will earn.

Oh, and did I mention there’s a time limit? Of course there is.

And just for more of a challenge, if your opponent forms a particularly awesome word with lots of points, you’ll have bits of ice grow on your screen and you can’t use letters under that ice until it melts, effectively slowing you down and potentially decreasing your score.

When you first launch, you’ll get the opportunity to earn 150 coins right off the bat if you connect using Facebook. You can also connect with email but that won’t earn you anything. You’ll be assigned a name and you can change that if you want.

Click on the two-person game icon on the home page and a list of online players will show. You can choose to play against anyone there. The first time you play, I recommend you play against the training opponent to check things out and learn what to do.

Coins and Boosts

As for things that will make your game easier, you can organize your letters into a grid formation and you can buy letters you need. Use the coins you’ll earn playing, or buy them in-app. Other boosts include score multipliers and the Ice Melter, each of which cost different amounts of coins.

The game is integrated with Game Center and Facebook and so you can play with friends or against the computer if there’s no one online. There’s also an after-game chat feature. Some people might consider the fact that you can’t talk while you play but some people will like the fact that there is one less distraction to keep you from becoming the King of Words!
