News is News
Regardless of how you want to get your news the LA Times app has every platform you will need. You can swipe left and skim all the sections of the award-winning news outlet, then scroll down and read the stories you're looking for.

The operation works smoothly for the most part. I found swiping the screen too fast, not allowing each section to fully load, will cause the app to crash. The downside to this is it inflates the time it takes to get to the section you are looking for.
Within each article you can change the size of the text or even view a high-resolution version of the picture accompanying the article. These features are extremely common in any news app, and although it works a little faster than most apps, it hardly places LA Times above the rest.
You Don't Have to be in LA
The one thing that LA Times does utilize, which has start to become commonplace with news apps, is that it allows you to swipe right from the home page to give you a list of all the ways the LA Times shares its stories.

You can choose among Twitter, the "LA Now" RSS feed, or view by photo, video, or headlines; it's all in one spot for ease of use.
The graphics are slick and not overpowering. Even the permanent ad for a subscription to the LA Times is so easy on the eyes you barely realize it's there. LA Times does have a little customization of the app in the settings section.
You can change the article font size, reorder the layout of the sections so you see what you want as soon as you open the app, and whether you want the app to download the latest stories when it's offline. It's not many options, but a few are better than none.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Layout is well-designed and easy to use
- A few customization options
- Ability to get the latest news from Los Angeles anywhere
Cons
- Swiping or scrolling too quickly causes the app to crash
Final Thoughts
The LA Times app is great if you need to be connected to what's going on in the greater Los Angeles area. It has its limitations, but also its merits. The persistent crashing is a little irritating, but if you show a little patience it's not a problem.
All in all it's a decent news app, but nothing really sets it apart from the rest of the major news outlet's apps out there.
