Language Translator app review: your travel companion

Reviews

Introduction

If you plan on traveling to a country where you don't speak the language then you are bound to have some issues with language barriers. The Language Translator app can help you out by providing translations of words, sentences, phrases, and even paragraphs. This app comes in handy for more than just traveling as it can be used to learn a new language, brush up on your skills, and just provide translations when needed.

Pick a Language

The app offers a huge selection of language pairings so that you have plenty of options to choose from. Some of the languages supported include Spanish, Italian, French, German, and Portuguese. This app isn’t a new one but it did just go through an update last month that was able to address a number of issues that were plaguing it and causing it to get low customer ratings.

The best iPad apps for learning Spanish

The app translates between your chosen languages by using Google's language translation service. If you want to switch the destination and source text just tap the switch button for instant results.

In typing in sentences/phrases to translate I do find it to be smooth and relatively quick, although there is definitely a slight delay though while you wait for the translated text to appear. I also have come across some issues with translations in it suddenly switching to a whole other language I didn’t pick.

Added Features

As far as added features go there isn’t a whole lot. What is handy is that you can email your translated text to a recipient. Simply tap on the email button and it will take you to your email service to send the text from there. This is great if you’re composing a letter to someone in another language or even asking a question of an international hotel, car rental company, or other service.

Best iphone and ipad apps

What is very distracting in this app is the huge amount of ads across more than half the screen. It makes the screen look very cluttered and busy and also hard to spot where you are supposed to type and view your translations. There is more fluff and ads on the screen than actual information. If you touch an icon you didn’t mean to be prepared to be taken to outside websites filled with ads and other apps to download/purchase. The user interface could definitely do with some cleaning up.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • There are a number of languages supported
  • Translate words, sentences, phrases, and paragraphs
  • Send your translations by email
  • Quickly and easily switch your source and destination text

Cons

  • Translations take a few seconds
  • There seems to be lots of bugs with the app
  • The app is loaded with ads
  • The user interface is busy, cluttered, and not user-friendly

Final Thoughts

With so many free translator apps out there the Language Translator app is extremely disappointing. I find it is slow, not user-friendly, and really doesn’t do a great job. There are much better options out there.
