Introduction
My Talking Tom is a fun game made to mimic the digital pocket pets that first arrived on the market back in the late 1990s. My five year old daughter immediately took to it, grabbing my iPhone out of my hand to care for her Tom.

Digital Pocket Pet Meets iPhone
If your child has wanted a pet, why not download a free app that lets kids have a little fun? My Talking Tom includes all the basics for a pet cat, minus the stinky litter box. You start with a basic gray cat with green eyes that is hungry, needs a cat box, and a cat nap!
Best iphone and ipad apps
These needs are all met simply and immediately as part of the tutorial for your child (or the animal loving adult!). By the end of this brief tutorial you will go up a level and unlock a new fur color and eye color, thus also learning how to personalize your feline friend.
As time passes, the four icons at the bottom of the screen fade from chartreuse (yellow-green) to white, indicating your pet’s needs. For example, you can see in the screen shot that my cat is tired. Simply click that moon icon to take him back to his bedroom, turn off the lights, and your cat will go off to dreamland.
Mini-Game Within
In order to earn levels and coins more quickly in My Talking Tom, there is a mini-game on the play screen. When you return to the smiley face icon, a game controller icon appears.
Click it and you are sent to a mouse-bashing game similar to Whack-a-Mole. You tap where the mice are to catch them and keep the game going. Your tap will whack them with your mallet, and you collect coins for purchasing personalization items in the same manner.
While this game is simple and effective, it is also repetitive and gets boring quickly. As an adult, I was done with it within minutes, and my five year old kept handing me the phone to get the mice.
Perhaps the developers could expand this portion of the app. On the other hand, Tamagotchis also had only one small game that was repetitive but necessary to move on.
As an added bonus, Tom can mock you. My baby took to screaming at him and having him scream back, and my five year old loved having him say ridiculous things. It’s a neat little addition that gives the app its name.

Final Thoughts
Overall, I really enjoyed My Talking Tom. Yes the mini-game is a bit boring with its repetitiveness, and yes the personalization is expensive, but there is a mini-game and you can alter your pet’s appearance! Plus, he talks back to you. My daughter loves it, and that’s what the app was for: to make kids happy.
