Sign Language ABC's app review: teaching the alphabet

Reviews

Introduction

It used to be that sign language was only taught to those who needed to use it but nowadays it seems like more and more people are learning to sign. With that in mind the sign Language ABC's app gives you a great and simple way to sign the alphabet. The app is incredibly easy to use and follow making it perfect for all age groups.

Sign Like a Pro

Do you want to be able to sign like a pro? If so this app can teach you using its interactive and simple approach. Often apps for sign language will teach you with videos or images; this isn't the case with this app. Instead it uses a 3D animated hand to give you a more realistic feel and look.

What's really cool is the fact that these signs are made in real time and you can take advantage of the 360° views. Turn the hand around, check it out, and then compare your hand positioning next to it. It’s like having your own sign language coach right next to you walking you through the sign.

The screen has no clutter or ads to distract you so all your focus is on the animated hand.

Using the App

Launch the app and choose to either practice the signs or take a quiz to see how well you have learned and remembered the information. On the screen you will see the animated hand, an arrow facing left, an arrow facing right, and the sign button. As well in the top right-hand corner is the letter of the alphabet that you are signing.

Type a letter into the search box and tap on the “Sign” button and the hand will come to life. Keep pressing the “Sign” button as much as you want or need in order to learn the sign. Tap on the arrows to slowly turn the hand to another angle or leave your finger pressed down on the arrow for continuous and slow movement.

The developer has promised to update the app with additional words but it has been over one year since its original release and still no words have been added. For right now all you can learn is one letter at a time. In quiz mode you will be shown a sign and then you need to input the answer, which is the letter the hand is signing.

Final Thoughts

The Sign Language ABC’s app is a great and easy way to learn how to sign the alphabet; however. it feels far from complete. Without being able to sign words this one doesn’t offer you much in the long run.
