There are now some great iPhone and iPad apps for acting which have come a long way the last few years.
From script writing to rehearsing your character to seeing who’s casting, to keeping up to date with the all the latest reports - apps for acting are becoming increasingly important to have in this profession.
Actor Genie
Price: $9.99
Recent version rating: 3.5/5 from 108
Want to get the minute to minute scoop on all the latest casting openings for TV and film, find out who’s hiring, get names and numbers of who to contact to blast your job applications around?
The Genie app is used by many agencies now as a way to fine tune their casting roles while reaching multiple groups of people for free, which obviously is great benefit to actors.
In the bottom menu of the display interface of this app you have – Todays Take, What’s Casting, Contacts, Actor Tools and Headshot.
You get other info on places to be seen, best headshot photographers and a ton of material for people new to acting to study as well for the more seasoned pro.
This app is exclusive to people living in the US so if outside the States don’t purchase.
Reviews are good if a little mixed so check first as app upgrades are regular.
Scripts Pro
Price: $5.99
Recent version rating: 3.5/5 from 76
If you’re a script writer or simply into writing and fancy yourself as somewhat of a story teller then this script app helps you get immersed in writing.
With no distractions on the interface, it’s laid out like a script – works better in landscape – and the screen is clutter free with various tools to help you roll out your material fast as your imagination runs free.
It features FDX and CELTX files with easy to use scene editing and re-ordering with a nice preview mode.
There are many more features but essentially it’s a place where you can go and run free from other intrusive apps as you can hide your tool bar and keyboard.
For script writing it might be worth considering a voice to text recognition software like dragon naturally speaking to help speed up your productiveness.
Audio Memo’s Free
Price: Free
Latest version rating: 4/5 from 241
There are number of voice recording apps and software out there that you can use for all sorts of professions, but it’s obviously a must have for acting professionals.
Be careful what you choose though first as there are many horror stories from students especially that spend hours recording lectures and then the app decides not to work and you get no support.
Audio Memo’s however gets great reviews, it’s free and there are no recording length limitations.
This is an add supported app hence you get a lot of the premium services for free, but the ads are non intrusive unlike others.
There are so many features we won’t list them all here but some important points are that you can use this app on an iPad touch, you get high quality recordings of 44100 Hz and it records when device is in sleep mode and should you be rehearsing and your phone rings it will pause automatically.
You also get a wide range of volume controls and settings to adjust your voice accordingly.
The only slight down side of this “free” app is that you can’t send emails from your iPhone or smartphone with more than 3MB of audio material.
You would have to copy it to your SD card or USB or whatever and send it across to a PC/Mac to forward.
