This iPhone board game is a great problem-solving app that gets your brain going! I love a little game of minesweeper in the morning while I wait for the kids to get dressed. It wakes me up, and gets me ready for the day.
Let's diver deeper into this game to see how it stacks up against other popular board game apps.
Problem Solving and Deductive Reasoning
For those of you not familiar with the original minesweeper game, Minesweeper: The most famous game in the world! Free! Mines explode bombs all must! sets out a grid in which there are hidden land mines.

You click on the blank squares hoping to open up a safe spot in which you can then problem-solve your way to victory, marking each square as safe or flagging as a bomb.
To flag as a bomb, you simply hold your finger over the grid space, watch the bomb count, and when you have marked the space, the count will go up. I kept trying to see under my finger, but this is impossible as the square is 5mm by 5mm and your finger just covers the whole thing!
Minesweeper will come up with a number between 1 and 7 that indicates how many bombs the particular square is in contact with. Diagonals, sides, top, and bottom are all fair game. It is your job to look around the other squares to mark the land mines.
Reasoning Similar to Sudoku
I came to Sudoku later on, but having played the original minesweeper for many years, I was thrilled to have found Minesweeper.

With Sudoku, you have to reason where which number between 1 and 9 fits in the grid and align it with the vertical and horizontal line to complete the puzzle. In Minesweeper, you just have to find the 15 bombs in the 10x10 grid on easy, and the 70 bombs on the hard mode.
On the MS Windows version from years ago, the number of squares on the grid would increase as well, and due to the limited screen size, you have to slide the 20x20 grid to access the larger area.
Be careful, if you tap a bomb by accident, it's game over!
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Easy tap-to-find play
- Easy hold-to-mark bombs
- Kept the original feel to the game
- Nothing fancy means you can have this among your small always-there game apps
- Problem solving stretches your thinking and reasoning skills
Cons
- Limited by screen size so hard level is nearly impossible
