Citymaps - The Social Map app review: create maps of your favorite places and see maps your friends have made

Reviews

Introduction

Complete with Instagram photos and tags for various events and locations, this is the number one map app for staying up to date with what your friends, family, and even celebrities are doing. You’ll find all kinds of cool and interesting entries on this innovative social map.

I think the idea of plotting social media entries on a map is a pretty cool idea, and Citymaps definitely achieves this with flying colors.

This app is a great way of discovering new places to visit, including restaurants, bars, and other venues, and even features personal posts from various celebrities and publishers. I would definitely recommend checking this out on your iPhone if you want a break from the standard news feed format of other social media sites.

Putting Social Media On the Map

To really get the most out of Citymaps - The Social Map, I would recommend starting by going straight to the Sign In screen. This can be accessed upon startup by tapping the menu icon in the top left-hand corner of the screen when you first see a map view of your local area.

From here, you can create a user account by using your Facebook account, so this should only take a few seconds and will enable you to see all of your friends’ check-ins, Likes, and other posts. It will also automatically populate your Citymaps profile with information from your Facebook profile

Once you’ve registered, you’ll be treated to a Tour of the various features within the app, with the core functionality enabling you to “create maps of the places you love.”

Share Your Favorite Places

You’ll see locations plotted as small thumbnails on maps, and tapping on each one brings up a Facebook-esque post relating to the venue. You’ll see information such as how many Likes and comments the post has received, as well as a button enabling you to add the place to your own map.

What’s more, if you really like the look of somewhere that your friend has checked-in at, you can access detailed directions and even share it with your friends and family online via Facebook, Twitter, email, and text message.

Final Words

Citymaps - The Social Map is definitely one of the best apps of its kind that I’ve come across.

Being able to plot items on a map to share with your friends is really the logical next step for social networking on the iPhone and iPad as it provides an awesome visual interface rather than the same old news feed format.
