Words Game Pro app review: a fantastic educational word game

Reviews

Introduction

As an English teacher I’m always on the lookout to get teenagers more involved with learning the language and expanding their vocabulary. Especially with the more advanced classes it is important to use technology to engage them and have them learn playfully. With a stroke of luck I stumbled over Words Game Pro by Alexander Fedotov. Personally, I wouldn’t classify this as a game, as it it quite dry, but more as an educational app. It works flawlessly in the classroom and even I have learned some new words!

Working your way through

The concept of the game is simple: Words Game Pro gives you a nine letter word and you have to use the letters in that word to make as many new nouns as possible. Each level has its own threshold of success and will let you know when you actually have unlocked the next level. I will suggest that before using it in a classroom environment you play through the game at least a few time so you can find words that fit in your current curriculum. Words increase in difficulty as you progress and the words you can create get more difficult as well, so be prepared. You don’t need to have a dictionary ready.

Other features

The reason you don’t need a dictionary for the app is that one is included in the app. Simply tap on a word that you don’t know and the app will spit out the meaning. Hints are given as well, but not examples. The hints use etymology and definitions, which will make you guess about what a hidden word could be. The game does only accept singular nouns; to there is no need to add plurals to the list. Any words marked as vulgar in the dictionary are also excluded, so no worries about kids trying out and trying to be funny. On the level select screen you will always see how many words are left to discover, so you can always use this game over and over again in your class and see if they learned new words, or if they can guess new ones that you can teach them.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Educational and didactically correct
  • A perfect app for in the classroom
  • Fully detailed and working dictionary
  • Free!!

Cons

  • Not really a game
  • Only recognizes nouns

Conclusion

Words Game Pro is a great little free app, but should get a few more improvements. I think that if the app would have a little bit more content, the app could be widely used in classrooms all over the world, but at the moment, as it’s just for nouns, the app is lacking a bit. If the developer would add verbs to it as well, I think he could easily ask some money for it as it really offers a challenge, even to the best English speakers in the world. Teachers, get it while it’s still free!
