The Ant and the Grasshopper app review: finally a cool storybook for kids
Introduction
With all the books for kids in the App Store, it’s hard to find one that stands out, has a good message for kids and features enough activities and interactivity to keep the young ones interested long enough. Luckily I stumbled upon The Ant and the Grasshopper by TabTale LTD. This interactive
bed time app for iPhone and iPad has it all: tons of interactivity on every page and a lot to do for the youngsters. Add on top of that a beautiful story about an ant and a grasshopper and you’ve got a clear winner.

Interactivity
The first thing that came to mind when I was looking through the app is the great art style. Every page is filled with color, and most of the objects that stand out on the pages are interactive, meaning you can tap on them and something will happen. Sometimes this is a simply movement of the object, but it can also result in sounds or more! Kids can easily play around with all the interactivity on the page while the parent reads the story to them, or when the app reads the story to the kids.

Other Options
This
bed time app is absolutely brimming with options. First of all, there is an autoplay option for the youngest of kids, where the app moves on by itself. Your kids only have to sit and play with the page while the story goes on. Secondly, your older kids can read the story by themselves in Read It Myself mode. Of course they can also play around with the environments. There is a counting game, where kids have to count how many times the grasshopper is jumping, and there is a Read To Me mode, where your kids are supposed to read with the spoken text of the app.

Pros and Cons
Pros
- Tons of content
- A classic fable by Aesop
- Learning with a message
- Completely free!
Cons
- There are ads to be found in the bottom of the app, which can be annoying for the smallest children.

Conclusion
The Ant and the Grasshopper is an absolute App Store gem. Tons of different activities, a beautiful story about friendship and sharing, a great art style and a lot of interactivity make this free book a must-have for anyone with children of their own. Due to the different options, you can even teach your kid how to read using this app. The app is made fully compatible for both iPad and iPhone, though I suggest using it on the former. The app is just over 30 MB in size, and is only available in English. Some ads are annoying as your kids might accidentally tap on them.
