Super Piggy - the flying pig app review: a Flappy Bird clone with a few more options

Reviews

Introduction

In the last few months the App Store has been overrun with apps that have based themselves around the success of Flappy Bird. Most of these apps were actually after the quick bucks that the developer of Flappy Bird had successfully made, but some others have actually tried to improve the game by adding another layer to it. Super Piggy - the flying pig by developer Maxim Ladid is one of the latter apps as it actually has done something to improve on the successful formula of Flappy Bird. Super Piggy is designed for both iPad and iPhone, even though the game looks better on the former. The game is available for free and like its predecessor, bases its profits on ads.

Gameplay

Super Piggy works exactly the same as Flappy Bird. You simply tap the screen and Super Piggy goes a little bit up. If you don’t tap, Super Piggy will slowly come down. The whole trick of the game is to maneuver Super Piggy through a maze of pipes. If you have succeeded doing this for at least 10 pipes, the game will speed up, and this will happen every 10 pipes. You will notice quickly that the game will become harder and then you die. This means you need to start again. The biggest change is the addition of difficulty levels. The easy level is available from the start, and to unlock the medium level you will need to leave a review in the App Store. The next difficulty level will open up after you get 50 points on the previous one. In total there are four difficulty levels.

Graphics and Sound

Compared to Flappy Bird, the graphics have improved a bit. The developer didn’t take a look at the Super Mario Bros series for inspiration, and therefor will also not be sued by Nintendo. There are still pipes, but they are orange, and the sprites are in a higher resolution than in Flappy Bird. Super Piggy himself doesn’t really move, which is a missed opportunity. They could have given him a cape or at least wings to make it all look a bit more thought-out. The sound is limited to a very oinky menu song and oinks for every point you score.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • The difficulty levels really add another layer to the proven concept
  • Super addictive
  • Good graphics

Cons

  • No animations for Super Piggy

Conclusion

I actually had more fun with Super Piggy than I ever had with Flappy Bird. The game is by far not as frustrating and is a lot more fun and accessible to play. I like the fact that the game goes faster and faster the further you get, though I do think that the developer should have given Super Piggy at least a cape or wings. The app is developed for both iPad and iPhone and is just over 17 MB.
