Super Little Caves app review: a simple game with a tiny hero
Introduction
I remember that when I was young, I always loved to do these mazes you would find on placemats in restaurants and on the back of cereal boxes. You can still find these nowadays, but due to my experience doing them, they have become way too easy for me. I always wondered why no one ever tried making this into a video game, as mazes have always been a huge part of especially adventure games. In Super Little Caves, a game by Philip Bemis, you will find very complicated mazes, which are the main part of the game. This game is made compatible with both iPhone and iPad and is just over 62 MB.

Gameplay
In Super Little Caves you play as a fly. Not just a fly, but a fly that can go under water as well. The whole point of the game is to save the princess (what an original story!), who has been kidnapped by the evil grasshoppers. You simply use a digital on-screen control stick to move your character around and guide him through an intricate maze. There will be all sorts of blockades that you will have to overcome and you will need to solve all kinds of small puzzles to be able to continue on your quest.

You will also be able to talk to different characters in the world who will give you all kinds of hunts and tips, as well as background information. The world of the game is huge, so you will have to try and remember where the different paths open up and try and reach those point to progress further.

Graphics and Sound
Super Little Caves uses a really nice retro pixel style, just like we are used to from the 8-bit consoles released in the late eighties. This does bring a few troubles with it, due to the scale of the game, as sometimes it’s hard to see where your character is, especially in very busy areas. Since the caves are small, it can be hard to plan your correct path as well. The music matches this style perfectly and the graphics and sound come together nicely like a classic game.

Pros and Cons
Pros
-
A huge game world
-
Graphics and sound in perfect balance
-
Funny characters
Cons
-
The main character is sometimes hard to spot
Crazy characters
Conclusion
I really enjoyed playing Super Little Caves. The game is easy to play but has a lot of difficult mazes, and the game’s difficulty goes up rather soon. The graphics and the sound are in perfect harmony with each other, even though that means that sometimes you lose sight of the character. The game world is huge and the characters who inhabit the world are really funny and well written. The game is compatible with both iPad and iPhone, but I would recommend playing it on the latter, due to the small main character. The game is just over 62 MB.
