Swish app review: a simple gesture-based app that will train your brain

Reviews

Introduction

Classic conditioning is a very famous way to condition animals, made famous by the test with the bell and the dogs, making them drool every time the bell rang. This is still being done to the day but maybe not in the ways this classic example demonstrated. For example, if you see a McDonalds commercial, you will get a bit hungry and when you see a nice cold bottle of Coca Cola, you will feel a bit more thirsty. It’s scary what these psychological things can do to you and the app I will review today uses a very similar technique to make you remember things. In Swish you simply follow the instruction on the screen. This game by developer Gianluca Tursi will try to condition you to remember certain orders. The app is developed for iPad but works fine on iPad too. The app is exactly 3 MB in size.

Gameplay

Gameplay is simple. When you see the word up, you swipe up, down means down, left means left, and right means right. Easy, right? Well, after a while, these instructions start disappearing and you will soon find out what effect this game has had on you. As soon as you swipe the wrong direction, you will have to start again, but I found out simply after one play that I already knew the colors that belong to each instruction. You only have one second to make a decision although you will be a lot faster when you get to know the game.

Graphics and Sound

The graphics are simple and almost non-existent. The game initially has text on the screen, but after a while the only thing left is the color and a small timer in the top. This is the reason why the game is so small. The developer definitely followed the design of "less is more." The sound is really annoying, and even when I had my volume turned off completely, I could still hear the annoying ping that you hear after you swipe correctly. Why is this still there when I turn off my volume? People on my commute are going to hate me playing this game.

Conclusion

Swish is a wonderful small little game that simply proves how your brain can be affected by repetition of certain instructions and colors. The app follows the design rules of simplicity, which makes the app usable by everyone. The only big downsides are the lack of longevity and the fact you can’t turn the sound off. The app is designed for both iPad and iPhone and weighs a mere 3 MB, which makes it very small.
