NBC DFW app review: news you can use

Introduction

If you're living in the DFW metroplex area and are on the look out for a news app for your iPhone or iPad, NBC DFW should be a strong contender to keep you up-to-date on the current events, breaking news, weather forecasts, and even traffic reports from around this area.

This app will also connect you to some of the more popular and trending blogs in your community to bring you closer to society and real life; a feat that is rarely achieved by the usual social networking. Blog posts are also a great way to receive different kinds of opinions rather than the usual agenda-based spin of mainstream news channels.

You can find this news app in the News section of the App Store. You can download it for free but the catch, as with all free apps, is that there will be ads along the bottom of the screen, and there is no way to remove them even if you want to pay to do it.

These ads, in my opinion, blend in with the theme and are customized based on your location, so they are not quite as bad a hindrance to the user experience, and are worth the free download.

You'll notice the NBC DFW app only takes up 8.7 MB of space on your iOS device. It downloads and launches quickly, and continues to start up in an instant each time you open it. The first thing you'll see is the pleasant user interface which has the NBC 5 News logo at the top of the screen along with the classic blue theme.

The default screen is the Top Stories page, which will give you the day's latest headlines at a glance, on a thumbnail-view chronological list of published articles. Each of the thumbnails has the truncated headlines and date and time of publishing at the bottom.

You can set up push notifications to receive alerts as and when new stories are published, but I would advise against it, because the frequency of publishing can be rather frequent and randomly timed, so you might be bothered by them after a while, like I was.

When you tap on each article, you'll see that it's laid out in a beautiful format of image, headline publishing time and date, and the text. On the right there is a button tray that lets users share the article, increase or decrease the font size, and even save it to favorites for retrieving later on.

Navigate away from the Top Stories section by using the menu button at the top left corner of the screen. This will take you to the Weather Forecast, Video section, and the Blue Star section that will cover a lot more going on in your locality.
