Steampunk Tower app review: a new tower defense game which takes the name literally
Introduction
Steampunk Tower is a tower defense game by Chillingo Ltd. The app, designed for both iPad and iPhone, takes the name of the genre very literally as you would be building your defenses in the tower that you are defending as well. This is a clever twist on the tower defense, as you will never have to focus on where on a path you put your towers, nor watch enemy movement if you have a multi-branched map. The app weighs in at just under 60 MB, which is not much for an in-depth game like this, while it brings enough originality to the table for genre enthusiasts like myself. This game truly stands out within the genre.

Gameplay
The gameplay of Steampunk Tower is rather easy. You select your mission on a world map and you instantly get dropped on the battle screen. The good thing about this is that the screen doesn’t move. You will always know what you need to do. You simply build different weapons in the base of your tower and drag them to where you want them placed. After that you can always move your weaponry to different places on the tower, but only if you have space. To upgrade your tower, you will need to drag it back to the base, meaning it will be out of commission until it’s placed back on a platform. When you run out of space, the tower will grow automatically, giving you more space to place your weapons.

Graphics and Sound
Every time I boot up an app and I see the logo of Chillingo, I kind of know what to expect. The graphics of the game, even though not top-notch, are of decent quality, especially during cut scenes or during time spent on the map. The whole game breathes this Steampunk style and this is found in every aspect of the game, even in the sound. The sound is well-implemented and really adds to the atmosphere of the game. I mentioned in previous reviews that I really appreciate good presentation, and this game absolutely nails it!

Conclusion
I would have loved to be in the design meeting at Chillingo when they presented the concept of this game. Let’s make a tower defense game where you actually have to defend a tower! Sheer brilliance! The design of the game is really well done as well; from sound to graphics, everything in the game makes perfect sense. I really can only recommend this game, as it’s completely free and it only is just under 60 MB and you get a lot of content for that. The app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone.
