Zap the Enemies, Share with the Monsters
Math Planet is an app full of really fun math games. I tested the middle school level, and played a number line game, a sharing fractions game, and few other math games. I really liked how the fractions were taught. In one level you had to share the already cut pieces with the monsters, and as the level progressed you also had to cut the pieces. Additionally, there was a number line fractions game where you had to lay the bubbles with fractions on the line in their equivalent spots. This was fun, and I could see how it would be challenging for students new to the concept, yet a more interesting way of learning than simply practicing the exercise over and again.

The object was to adjust your laser to the correct angle and shoot the asteroids. The first few have the angles written on them, but then you have to estimate the angle to hit the asteroid. Most of them are stationary, however as you get better at the level, they do start to fly towards you.

I Like Math Games
As a teacher, and as an individual who had difficulty mastering math, I like math games, and Math Planet is a great one. It is not a free app, but it does provide some free trial levels. This means that you can get a good try with your students or your child before deciding to purchase. If you do decide to go for it, one grade level is $9.99, and to unlock every level is $19.99. I've mentioned in other reviews how this would be no problem if you were investing in a computer game, so if you consider it this way, the fee is reasonable. As far as apps go, it is still pretty expensive. Give the app a good test and see if your child likes it. I found it to be a really fun, yet instructional app. The directions were easy to follow, and when I plugged in the grade one level, my six-year-old loved trying it out.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Free trial levels
- Great games to teach all the basics of math

Final Thoughts
Math Planet is an iPhone and iPad app that helps students and children to learn math. It does a really great job of doing so in an interactive way through games. Each game is presented in such a way that your child can immediately start to succeed, and as they begin to excel the game becomes more difficult. For example a number line may start with zero through ten, and then increase to zero through one hundred. In the angle asteroids game, the asteroids start to move. I had fun playing this game, and will be giving it a whirl with my tutoring students next week. Overall, great app and I look forward to continuing to use it!
