If you're looking to carry around a guide to about 400 of the most beautiful wildflowers that are found within the state of California, then California Wildflowers is one iPhone and iPad app that you should definitely consider purchasing.
Although there exist over 6000 varieties of plans in this beautiful state, only about 400 are included in this app, so it's not very comprehensive. It does provide very detailed descriptions and other information pertaining to the plants that are included in the listings.
Let's take a look at the features of this app.
Content & Photos
California Wildflowers is available for purchase at a rather steep price of $9.99 and will take up a whopping 173 MB of space on your iPhone or iPad, because all of the information contained within this app is stored locally so users can access it without the need for an internet connection.
This can prove to be useful when out and about in nature, whether you're hiking or exploring botanical gardens in the state of California. There are more than 600 high-resolution color photographs included in this app, all taken from the Hartmann Multimedia CD-ROMs.

User Interface
This app features a variety of ways to search for the plants you're looking for. Thumbnail images are available and sorted by color, family, and photo type so you can quickly identify the plant you're looking at.
Index and Search functions are also available so you can look up plants by their Latin name as well as common name, family, color, area, and habitat type. The only issue with this app is the very, very limited repertoire which means that users are unable to identify many of the plants they see.
This app was released in June 2009 and the developers promised they would add more species and photographs in future updates, however, they have not lived up to their word because no updates have been made to this app at all, which is disappointing because it has plenty of potential.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Comes with 400 species of plants that can be seen around the State of California
- Self-contained app allows for easy reference even when you are out and about, not connected to the internet
- Search for your flower of choice by looking at thumbnail images that are sorted by color
- Also look up plants by their name, scientific or otherwise
- Sort plants by family, color, area, and habitat type
Cons
- Takes up 173 MB of data as all the information is stored locally
- Has a very limited collection of plants for reference so despite it's wonderful interface and functions, many users are unable to find the plants they're looking at
Final Words
California Wildflowers definitely has a really beautiful interface and some state-of-the-art search functions, particularly the ability to identify plants using the color-sorted thumbnails.
Its limited nature coupled with its steep price makes it an incomplete resource in my eyes, so I wouldn't suggest crowding up your iPhone or iPad with it unless you are in dire need for a resource like this one.
