If you’re a book lover there’s a good chance you’ve been inside a Barnes & Noble store. What makes these stores popular is their fantastic selection of books, movies, and many other items.

Like any other retailer it has its rivals, but very few peers. It stands to reason that a Barnes & Noble app would also be an industry leader and they haven’t disappointed. This app is full of purchase choices in every category just like you would find in a physical Barnes & Noble location.

For the most part this app works really well, but I did find it froze on me on occasion. This usually happened if I scrolled through items too quickly but if I scrolled slowly it worked fine. The other thing that would improve this app is if you were able to search through the fiction section by genres.

If you’re a fan of science fiction there’s no way of filtering by this genre only. Sure you can search for a specific title using their built in search function, but that won’t help you if you’re not looking for a specific title.

Quite often we just want to find a popular book in our favorite category but we don’t know exactly what we’re looking for. This is definitely a significant oversight. This app will require 12.8 MB of available space on your iOS device. 

How it Works

If you have ever used the Amazon online store or a similar type of site, then this app will have a very familiar feel for you. On the main home page you’ll find a search bar at the top, followed by books and other items in several different suggested categories.

To navigate through other sections of the app you can use the menu bar at the bottom of the home screen. It includes a browse section where you can look for your favorite category although as mentioned above, the fiction section is just every genre lumped together in one category. 

You can also access the search bar from the bottom menu, locate a store near you, and access your shopping bag of items you’ve selected for purchase. To make a purchase you’ll have to set up an account first, which includes entering your credit card information.

There’s also an information section which can be accessed from any page within the app. This can be accessed by tapping on the “I” you’ll find in the top right corner of every page. This section includes an order tracking function, customer service access, as well as access to your account. It’s generally pretty helpful.
