Apps that allow you to preview new looks are becoming increasingly popular. There are apps that will let you try out a new hairstyle, there are apps that let you try on makeup before you buy it, and now there’s an app that will let you try out a tattoo before you have it permanently needled into your skin.

It’s a great idea because getting a tattoo really is a big decision and it’s nice to be able to see what it looks like before making that decision. This is a pretty unique app with few if any rivals that really gives it a lot of potential; sadly, it just doesn’t quite live up to that potential.

There are a couple of major problems with this app. First of all the free version only includes five tattoos that you can choose from and if you want more you’ll have to purchase them through an in-app purchase of $0.99.

There are some decent tattoos in the premium pack, but the choice is still pretty limited. This app would be better if you could actually add your own tattoos from your photo gallery. 

How it Works

Virtual Tattoo Maker FREE has a very basic interface which is actually one of its major strengths; there isn’t a large learning curve here.

Along the bottom of the main window is a menu bar with four options. The first one is where you access the photo of yourself you want to use in the app: you can either take a new photo or select an existing one from your library.

The second icon on the menu is where you’ll find the available tattoos you can use. Once you’ve selected one it will appear on the screen and all you have to do is drag it to the area of your body you’re thinking about tattooing.

When you’re done with it you tap on the checkmark in the top right corner to save your changes. The third menu icon gives you the option of adding text to your tattoos and the fourth one allows you to share the picture with others for feedback.

This app really does have a lot of potential, it just suffers from a lack of options. Even the in-app purchase does not contain a great selection of tattoos. This app would be so much better if you could add your own tattoos.

The text feature needs some work as well since any text you add does not look very realistic. Perhaps some different fonts would be a good idea.
