Fold app review: where you have to fold up colored tiles to solve the puzzle

Reviews

Introduction

Fold by Ricardo Moura is a unique puzzle game where you have to fold up tiles to leave just one behind. The app was released at the end of June, 2013.

User Experience

After the launch page you are taken to a screen where you can choose Play or Options. The Options screen allows you to turn on and off the sound effects and music. You can view your achievements and leaderboards, restore purchases, reset game, and view the credits.

The music is slightly theme park-like, but it isn’t overly annoying.

In each level, you will see a screen full of different blocks in different shapes like dominoes. The goal is to touch one of the blocks, which will make the puzzle slowly disappear. You have to try to clear all but one tile from each color. If you do this successfully you will get a gold medal and you get to move on to the next puzzle. If there are more than one but not too many tiles left over, you could earn a bronze medal.

The trick here is that the tiles will act differently depending on the connectors, what’s up against them, and how the different colors are placed against each other. On top of that, you have no control about how the tiles will move and can’t manipulate them.

The great news is that there is an undo button, which you will use often, particularly once you get to the second grouping of levels. The first few are pretty easy to figure out, but that second group will really make you think.

The app overall is very minimalist and is a lot of fun if you go for this kind of puzzle. You don’t have to have super-fast fingers or waste your money on power-ups. Another great thing about the game is that it’s not timed, so you can take all the time you need to figure out your strategy.

Features

Some of the features of the app are unique gameplay, tolerable music and sound effects, and an intriguing addictive aspect.

In-App Purchases

You can buy the whole game for just $0.99, and it’s quite likely that if you get hooked on the first few levels, you’ll want to pay the dollar just to see what the rest of the puzzles hold, challenge-wise. It doesn’t take long to make it through the free version.

Personal Comments by Reviewer

I like this kind of game and like that it’s a unique type of gameplay. I enjoy the fact that there is no stress to playing. This would make a great game to play during a commute or while waiting in line. I like to play it while I eat breakfast.

It’s definitely thought-provoking and will make you scratch your head while you play. The puzzles start out really easy but get progressively more difficult as you go along.

If you’re looking for something easy, that doesn’t make you think much, this isn’t the game for you. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a challenge, I think you’ll like this one. Check it out.
