Introduction
This app is a very simple and straightforward digital temperature gauge that features a basic search facility that enables you to find the local temperature for your locality and dozens of locations worldwide in either Fahrenheit or Celsius.
Every time I review an app I ask myself if it really serves a useful purpose or if it is obsolete or redundant; in the case of Free Digital Temperature, I’m not so sure if this app is particularly relevant because it offers less functionality than the integrated Weather app that comes with iOS as standard.
Is it Cold in Here?
The basic functionality of this app is as follows: you can use your iOS device’s integrated GPS to obtain the temperature in either Fahrenheit or Celsius of your locality as well as being able to save a second location anywhere in the world, enabling you to slide between the two and perform a quick comparison.
The problem is, you can only save one location besides your current one; if you want to save more locations and not have annoying flashing ads at the top and bottom of the display, you’ll have to purchase the paid version of this app for $0.99.
This all sounds well and good, I mean the user-interface looks good, albeit a little sparse, and I don’t mind paying for extra functionality on my apps, but where is the incentive to pay out for more locations when I can just open up the iOS Weather app and immediately be able to save three different locations in addition to my current location?
I’d also like to add that I haven’t even been able to get the temperature for my current location because I keep being presented with an error message. The iOS Weather app, on the other hand, brought up the temperature, hourly weather forecast, and projected weather for the next week in a matter of seconds, and with a far more aesthetically-pleasing visual interface.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
Use your device’s GPS to get the temperature for your current location
-
Get the temperature for one other location anywhere in the world
-
Data presented in either Fahrenheit or Celsius
Cons
-
This app is redundant in light of the far superior functionality and visual elements offered by the standard iOS Weather app
Final Words
If this app were transformed into a fully-fledged weather app, or if perhaps there were additional features such as news headlines, market reports, and so on, I think this app would have far greater relevance in the context of the app market as a whole.
In its current form, however, I really can’t see the benefit of using this over the iOS Weather app, so if you’re just looking for a basic app that provides an at-a-glance view of the current temperature, you might as well just use Weather because you’ll at least get a weather forecast on the same screen as well.
