Microphone + Recording app review: use your device’s headphone jack to turn it into a microphone

Reviews

Introduction

This clever app enables you to hook up the output of your iPhone or iPad headphone jack to a home stereo system, PA setup, or powered speakers to turn your device into a microphone which can be used for public presentations, seminars, meetings, and much more.

This is a very simple app with a simple premise but it delivers on all of its promises and does so with great efficacy; whether you want to amplify your voice for a meeting or you’re a musician who wants to make some quick draft recordings of your new ideas, Microphone + Recording has exactly what you’re looking for.

Crystal Clear

I’m very impressed with the quality of the recordings I’ve made so far with this app, I’ve used a few basic recording apps in the past to jot down some musical ideas with just my voice and an acoustic guitar or piano; I usually find that there is a ton of hissing in the background and the audio is generally muffled.

Microphone + Recording produces some wonderfully clear recordings pretty much every time, and you can easily share and backup your recordings using iTunes, Wi-Fi or email. You can also share your tracks with friends and family online via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and SoundCloud.

Sharing recordings online is a really nice way to have some fun with the kids because they can unleash all manner of nonsense on the microphone and then share it with relatives on Facebook.

In terms of the more serious potential applications for this app, I would imagine there are very few limitations; you could record meetings, music, seminars, or just use it as a Dictaphone.

I’m especially happy with the way you can use the output on your device to amplify your voice; the sound quality probably isn’t quite high enough for singers to use it at a concert but it is definitely clear enough for people to use at speaking events.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Use your device’s headphone jack output to turn it into a microphone
  • Share your recordings online via social networking sites
  • Fantastic sound quality, suitable for all manner of event

Cons

  • There is nothing negative to say about this app except that the sound quality is probably not quite high enough for singers to use

Final Words

I’ve been hoping to find a decent recording app like this for a while now so I’m glad I stumbled upon it when I did.

There isn’t an incredible amount of functionality in terms of mixing and production tools but if you’re looking for a simple recording device that will enable you to jot down ideas and record presentations, Microphone + Recording should serve you very well.

I’ll definitely be keeping this app on my iPhone for the foreseeable future and I’d definitely recommend it to any musician or public speaker.
