Fight Imperial Forces, Rebel Raiders And, Um, Raptors In 'Battle Nations'

Reviews

Battle Nations, a role playing action game by Z2Live, situates you in a science fiction world of Imperial Forces, rebel raiders, and, for some reason, raptors. You are an Imperial soldier out to crush the rebels, a bunch of gas-mask wearing barbarians. You are accompanied by a gang of cartoon action figures, including the loveable alcoholic Lieutenant Morgan, the mechanic Floyd, and the quirky mechanic Zoey, who give you tips and instructions. The storyline is a little fuzzy, but the graphics are pretty clear. Build your base, train your soldiers, fight the rebels/other players and repeat is the basic gist of this game. You can unlock new units, buildings, and capabilities by advancing to the next level. There are 26 levels and in order to advance you can either create goods (grow food on a farm, bake food in a bakery, or make new tools, for example), or fight enemies. Fighting isn’t as risky as you might think; units are not killed in battle, they are merely injured. They can be healed at the hospital, but it costs resources.

The game is free but success is powered by Nanopods. These little green balls of energy (or mana, or currency, or whatever) cost real money, and can be purchased in varying quantities for $1.00 to $49.99. You can also win Nanopods in the game but it doesn’t hurt to be rich in the real world. Anything you can build, you can build faster with Nanopods. They’re also required in order to train certain types of units. Battle Nations is kind of like Age of Empires or Red Alert II, except without the different nations and unique units. Also, when you choose to fight an enemy, the game takes you to a separate screen to place units in a grid format in the arrangement of your choosing. You take turns with your opponent. You can play the computer or battle online against other players.

This game has been done before but this doesn’t mean it’s not fun. If you enjoyed Red Alert II (or, perhaps more accurately, Civilization) and were looking for a rough, tongue-in-cheek iPhone approximation, you might find it in Battle Nations.
