Free Wi-Fi Finder app review: use GPS to instantly find WiFi hotspots anywhere in the world

Introduction

If you’re traveling in a new city or foreign country, or perhaps your home Internet connection is down, Free Wi-Fi Finder is a great tool for locating free and paid WiFi hotspots by using your iPhone’s GPS functionality to provide you with a list of available networks.

I was amazed by how quickly this app was able to determine my location and display available WiFi hotspots on a map. Within literally five or 10 seconds I’ve got a selection of nine free and 24 paid networks, along with their addresses, directions, and contact details!

Never Get Stuck Offline Again

There are three main features within this app.

Firstly, you can use your device’s GPS to view nearby WiFi hotspots on a map or list view. If you don’t immediately see any networks on your map, try zooming out as this will scan a wider area and should produce a greater number of results.

You can actually filter the displayed results according to criteria such as Venue Type and Provider, and you can save results to your Recents list, lock the results to the map, and even submit your own hotspots.

The second feature is quite similar except that it works as a basic search facility which you can use to input a specific address and locate hotspots nearby. This is ideal for those of you who are planning a location and perhaps want to find WiFi connections close to your accommodation.

Another awesome function of Free Wi-Fi Finder is the offline database. By downloading this, you’ll have offline access to more than half a million free and paid hotspots spanning more than 144 countries, and you can search this database without an Internet connection.

I think it’s great that the developer took the initiative to offer this offline database because how else are people supposed to locate WiFi hotspots if they can’t actually find a WiFi hotspot!

All in all, this is a very well-developed app which runs very smoothly, looks great, and definitely offers a more than adequate level of functionality. Together, these factors make it an invaluable tool to keep handy on your iPhone if you should ever travel, be it for business or pleasure.

Final Words

I’ve personally always found the iPhone’s WiFi capabilities to be weak at best, so I would never expect it to be able to find a network located a hundred feet away, let alone a mile or two up the road!

I think the offline database alone makes Free Wi-Fi Finder well worth downloading, and the GPS functionality is just the icing on the cake which will enable you to generate search results a little quicker when you are connected.
