Introduction
There are plenty of word games to be found in the App Store, but mostly these are word finders or scrabble clones. Finding an actual original word game is hard, but Wordly by Scopely has a very clever gameplay mechanic that brings a whole new layer of strategy to the world of word games. The concept is simple: use the letters on the game board to create words. The letters you use change to your color, but can be turned to your opponent’s color if he uses them. You can stop this by surrounding a letter with your color, blocking it for your opponent’s use.

Single Player Game
In the single player version of the game, you will have to battle different big names out of history, such as William Shakespeare, Sigmund Freud, and Sir Isaac Newton. Simply play the game against them, win trophies, and earn bragging rights. The game will get more difficult with every new opponent.

Every turn you make costs brain power, which will recharge over time, meaning you won’t be able to continue playing at all times. You can of course buy more energy, which is pretty pricey, starting at $0.99 for four extra moves. When you win trophies you will progress through the ranks, starting at newbie. You will also unlock trophies by when you complete different achievements, which you can find in the trophies menu.
Online Play
By logging into Facebook, a whole new world of opponents opens up. You can play random people, as well as Facebook friends, for bragging rights. Playing online doesn’t take up any of your brain power, and can be done as much as you want; however, you do need to wait for your friends to finally come back to you, which can take quite a while. Of course the achievements mentioned in the previous paragraph carry on online as well, allowing you to win a lot more trophies and gain levels as you play. When you play a random, you can easily select a rematch, and if you know someone’s username you can also search them in the Wordly database.

Conclusion
I am now officially a Wordly addict. It’s a great strategic word game, and trying to steal letters away from your opponent is great fun. The surprise reaction from some of my friends has been amazing, especially just after I put down a long word and steal all their tiles away. There is a lot of strategy involved in this game, making it more than just another word game. The game is designed for both iPad and iPhone, and you can play it only when you are connected to the Internet. The game is just under 43 MB in size.
