Introduction

There aren’t many games about tanks that are as pretty as Boom! Tanks by The Codemasters Software Company Limited. It’s one of the best-looking free games I have seen in my career as an app reviewer. The game itself is relatively simple in its concept: you are a gunner on board a tank and you have to destroy any enemy tanks you will encounter on different missions. These missions get more and more difficult every time and you will need to upgrade your tank or buy a stronger one in the shop.

Missions and Game Progress

When you start the game you get a standard tank with standard equipment. Your first two missions are easy, and as long as you follow the tutorial you will be fine in beating these simple levels. You can always repeat these levels as they will give you a small reward in cash for completing them. You can progress further in the campaign mode by fighting the enemy in different missions, but you will soon find out you will need to invest in upgrading your tank to be able to beat the enemy's superior weaponry. Even the first enemy you find in Campaign mode is too hard to finish without upgrading, and of course this is where the game will make its money for the developer.

Upgrades and In-app Purchases

After every mission your team will tell you that you constantly need to upgrade your tank. These notifications are not in vain, as you will need to invest the coins you make after each mission. You can upgrade your tank in six different categories: increasing your attack power, your defensive skill, your aiming, and your reload speed. All of these make your tank more powerful in the battles. You will soon run out of money to upgrade, and then it’s obviously time to visit the store. You can buy a small amount of cash for $0.99, but when you pay more real world money, you will be rewarded with more free cash.  You can also buy gold, which is a lot more valuable, as you can use this to buy upgrades and replenish your energy, which is needed to play more battles.

Conclusion

As a typical free-to-play game, you will have to wait for hours to gain more energy to play. If you only have a few minutes every hour to play a game, this one might be the one for you, as it requires tactics and strategy to win, but only takes a few minutes to play. Having to buy upgrades with in-game money is nice, but they are too expensive, almost forcing you to spend real money in the store. The app is compatible with iPad and iPhone and reequires around 240 MB.
