Word BINGO app review: a classic reading and spelling app designed for six- to eight-year-old children

Reviews

Introduction

If you are looking for an engaging yet powerful tool to help your six- to eight-year-old learn about words, then Word BINGO is a must-have on your iPhone or iPad.

Created by ABCya, the makers of the ever-so-popular Math BINGO, Word BINGO helps your child practice reading and spelling more than 300 words through four fun and interactive games. In typical ABCya.com fashion, this game also consists of a high-end report card section to allow parents and teachers to see how their child is doing.

This app costs a very minimal $0.99, and consists of no third party ads, in-app purchases, integration with social networks, or analytics tools, ensuring the utmost privacy and security while your child learns and explores a new world of vocabulary.

Dolch Sight Words

Word BINGO works by helping familiarize your children with 300 Dolch sight words. What are these Dolch Sight words, you may ask. Sight words are words which can be easily recognized without having to spell out or sound out syllables phonetically.

Dolch Words are a compilation of English sight words put together by Edward William Dolch, PhD. This compilation consists of 220 words segregated by level of difficulty. These include pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and verbs; all the basics your child needs to get started in reading and spelling.

Further to these 220 words, there is a list of 95 nouns that children may come across in a typical day or in children's books.

All these 300+ words are incorporated into four games, namely Word BINGO, Spelling Practice, Word Fling, and Word It Up.

App Features

The first thing you need to do upon launching Word BINGO on your iPhone or iPad is to select a word list. Choose from Pre-Primer, Primer, First Grade, Second Grade, Third Grade, Nouns, or All Words.

Next, create a profile for your child or student. There is an option to create and maintain five profiles at any given time, and others can also play using a guest profile.

You'll be pleased to know that there is a powerful feature known as the My Report Card section nestled within this app. This feature allows you to keep track of the word accuracy by the percentage of sight words that were correctly identified by each player profile.

There is also a Score Board which displays the three best scores attained by each player.
