Flash Cards Work

Why would I download a flash card app like My Math Flash Cards App? Flash cards work! The only way to get facts to come to mind faster and faster is to repeatedly practice them.

The best iPad apps for learning Math

I don’t use flash cards often, as I prefer to use multi-sided dice, but this app is a nice fast paced way of checking how a student is doing in memorizing their math facts.

I like that there are two settings for your child to practice: a starter level if in Grade One or just beginning multiplication in Grade Three. I appreciate that there is a more difficult level as well to test how they do with mental math.

When presented with a question like 39 x 8, it is good to know that they can work that out somehow in their heads be it 40 x 8 – 8 or 30 x 9 + 9 x 8. Either way, they have solved the question and gotten an answer without needing a calculator!

When figuring out grocery items, how many ice cubes you’ll need at a party, or some other odd fact, you need to be able to do mental math.

Why Bother Learning These Facts?

My Math Flash Cards App has been a great check in app for my tutoring students. I will occasionally get them to run through a round of multiplication or even just addition to see how they are doing.

Every day you add items, even if it’s how long it will take to get from point A to point B, or how many eggs you need to make a batch and a half of cookies. Math is in everyday life, and it saddens me when I come across people who don’t recognize this.

This app will help students to grab those facts faster simply because they know their basic facts. While in the grocery store, you need to know roughly how much your cart has or you’ll break your budget. This is practical application of what they are taught in school.

Final Thoughts

My Math Flash Cards App is an iPad and iPhone app that assists drilling math facts. It has two settings: starter and advanced. You can practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with sets of 25 questions and a timer to show you how you are progressing.

I like that you always get 25 out of 25, and that the only thing that changes is your time. If you start with five minutes to complete the questions, and you get down to three, then you are doing pretty well!

The whole point of drilling is that it works to bring the answers more quickly to mind, and that it is of great assistance when doing everyday tasks such as grocery shopping, counting out how many people are coming to an event, or other mundane things that you don’t want to use a calculator for.

Math is necessary whether you like it or not, and this small, easy to use flash card app has been a great addition to my tutoring apps.
